Compound Profile

Researcher-grade specs. No guesswork.

Each vial ships with structural data and lot identifiers for the compound, plus a Certificate of Analysis documenting purity and identity. Ready for the bench. Synthesized via solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), purified by reverse-phase HPLC, verified by mass spectrometry, and tested for sterility and endotoxin load. Every spec is documented on the signed Certificate of Analysis that ships with your vial.

Oxytocin is a cyclic nonapeptide neurohormone produced by magnocellular neurosecretory cells of the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus. It was first isolated from bovine pituitary gland by Vincent du Vigneaud and colleagues at Cornell Medical College in 1953 and became the first peptide hormone to be chemically synthesized — work recognized by the 1955 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The molecule contains a disulfide bridge between Cys¹ and Cys⁶ that forms its characteristic bicyclic ring structure.

Preclinical and translational research has examined oxytocin across four broad domains: social behavior and affiliative signaling, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation, peripheral tissue effects (gut motility, uterine contractility, mammary gland function), and wound healing dynamics in animal models. Kosfeld, Heinrichs, and colleagues at the University of Zurich demonstrated in a widely-cited 2005 study that intranasal oxytocin administration increased trust behavior in a controlled economic game paradigm. Carter, Young, and Insel have contributed substantially to the literature on central oxytocin signaling and social cognition in both rodent and primate models. All findings referenced here derive from preclinical or experimental models and have not been validated in controlled long-term clinical trials.

Oxytocin research appears in Nature, Biological Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, and Psychoneuroendocrinology. It is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for any diagnostic, therapeutic, or preventive application in the research context. It is classified as a research compound only.

Documented Research Areas
